Hydrocarbons are organic compounds comprised exclusively of carbon and hydrogen. If the carbon atoms are linked together to form a straight or branched chain, the compound is an aliphatic. Aromatic compounds are characterised by carbon atoms being linked together in rings rather than in straight chains, such as benzene.
